When did the lemons learn the same creed as the sun? ~ Pablo Neruda
The sun is setting earlier and the evenings are getting cooler. Even though the signs of summer’s end have begun, many of us are reluctant to embrace autumn. We want to linger in the splendors of summer.
How will we hold on to summer? By paying homage to lemons! Summer and lemons go together like sunshine and happy times. Lemons shine bright for many of us as reminders of setting up our first lemonade stand in front of our home. Visit the Italian island of Capri in late August and you can dine in a garden filled with lemon trees. Just imagine the fragrant citrus scent. It was these memories that gave us the inspiration for our lemon-inspired table setting, featuring a selection of our best flatware.
Celebrate sunny days and blue skies with a blue and yellow lemon tablescape. A cobalt blue glass pedestal bowl brims with fresh lemons. Add more lemons around the base with some greenery and you have an easy, eye-pleasing centerpiece.
Mixed blue and yellow dishware and more cobalt blue glassware come together to create this summer fresh table setting.
Do the flatware settings you use matter?
You’ve told us that you love combining yellow and blue dishware to create refreshing lemon tablescapes. But, you may not realize the impact that your flatware can have on your table. To put things into perspective, we used the same place setting with 4 different artisan flatware settings to show the impact that your best flatware can have on your dinner table settings.
Whether it’s a small gathering of friends and family or a large event, the type and quality of flatware you use matters. Poor quality flatware can throw the entire celebration off. When you choose heirloom quality artisan flatware to complete the table, it elevates the visual appeal of your table settings.
#1 Medicki flatware
The Medicki gold flatware design features organic handles that widen slightly at the base. Rustic and elegant, they give this summer lemon tablescape a romantic flare. Hand-polished implements add to the freshness of this table setting and the warm vintage gold handles pair beautifully with the dark blue accents on this table.
Blue and Gold: A Classic Pairing
Ask any home decorator if blue and gold are a good color pairing and you’ll get a resounding yes as an answer. Classic and elegant, this combination works throughout the home. Blue is the color of the sky and then there is the “deep blue sea”. Blue makes us feel peaceful and serene. Gold lends a luxurious feel and is the color of wealth and sophistication. The vintage gold of our Medicki flatware settings is rich and earthy. Blue and gold is one color combination that will never go out of style, so if you have blue or blue and white dinnerware, a gold flatware set is the perfect finish.
#2 Brier flatware
The Brier black flatware set brings a sophisticated aesthetic to this summer place setting. It features slightly rounded handles that widen at the base. With its flat back, this artisan flatware is a classic flatware pattern that harmonizes well with everyday dinnerware and contrasts beautifully with elaborate dinnerware and glassware.
Black and Yellow: A High Contrast Pair
Perhaps part of the reason we associate lemons with summer is that the color yellow relates to sunshine, warmth, happiness, and energy. Splashes of yellow in your table settings instantly bring a cheerful aesthetic. Black is associated with sophistication. Together they make a bold, highly contrasting combination that grabs attention.
#3 Ridge flatware
Ridge flatware settings showcase distinctive handles with a middle crease or ridge and a rounded base. Left in the nascent state, the handles bring a rustic, organic look to any place setting.
These durable, stainless steel pieces have a solid, well-balanced feel in the hand.
Silver: Versatile and Complementary
Silver is often linked to prestige and affluence. It always feels modern, never dated. What’s more, silver can illuminate and reflect the energy of any color you pair it with. Jewel tones, like emerald green, navy blue, burgundy, and grape are the perfect complement to silver. Paler colors like light pink, for example, bring out the strong metallic hues of silver.
#4 Twig flatware
Inspired by nature, the Twig copper flatware set adds an artistic expression to this summer tablescape. The design features twig or branch-like handles with diagonal ends that resemble cut florals. Gentle curves animate the flatware and the knife has a forward curve in the handle for ease of use. Hand-polished implements contrast the warm antique copper, bringing a clean sparkle to these flatware settings.
Copper and Yellow: Complementary Tones
Copper tones continue to be a popular choice for designers and home décor enthusiasts. Found throughout the home, copper often finds a place in the kitchen. From hammered copper pendant lights and copper sinks in farmhouse and cottage-style kitchens to smooth copper backsplashes in modern Scandinavian-style kitchens, as a material, copper works with any style.
As a color, copper is just as versatile. Because it has orange undertones, it coordinates well with bright yellows and other bold orange shades. Why does copper highlight yellow, almost bolstering its joyful nature? According to color theory, complementary tones like copper and yellow come together as color “families”, which means you are assured they will co-exist happily in a color palette.
