Flatware: Mix and Match Secrets for a Stunning Table

Aug 26, 2024Swati Singh

Look up “matchy-matchy” in the dictionary and it explains it as a term used to describe things like clothes or decorations that are very similar, especially when you think the look is not attractive. We also found this sample phrase: “I am not particularly a fan of a matchy-matchy themed table.”

In the design world, mixing and matching furniture and home decor is considered an art form. You'll find plenty of mix-and-match expert tips for everything from choosing furniture for a space to picking colors and patterns for bedding in a bedroom. When it comes to the dining room and setting a stunning table, mixing and matching is a trend that everyone loves. We can’t get enough of interesting tablescapes!

Like us, you’ve probably seen many tablescapes with mixed and matched plate stacks or even a mashup of different colored glassware. But, what about flatware? After all, flatware sets are the unsung heroes at every table. Often considered the jewelry for the table, our best flatware sets also do a lot of the hard work with very little notice or praise.

When you consider that everyone gathers around the table before dinner, a table setting is like a pre-dinner gift for your family and guests. Why not treat them with a stunning table, complete with a unique mix of your best flatware sets?

For inspiration, we created 4 themed mixed flatware tablescapes, complete with some helpful “secrets” to get you started. Enjoy!

Lemon Chic

A bowl of fresh, bright yellow lemons was the inspiration for this free-spirited lemon chic table setting. Copper flatware adds character and warmth to any table setting, and this mix of textures and patterns complements the mismatched dinnerware. The Fiestaware cup and saucer, yellow-tinted glassware, and classic linen napkin finish the look.

Why we love this copper silverware combination: The vintage-inspired Celia pattern with its faceted round handles and flattened ends looks pretty and petite next to the bold dimpled “ribbons” and footed base of the Twisted Urban flatware. They say opposites attract, so this must be a mismatch made in heaven!

Tip #1: Don’t be afraid to experiment with patterns

Part of the fun of mixing flatware is that you can play with different designs or patterns. Try combining florals with geometrics or merge smooth-handled flatware with textured hammered ones. Whether the pattern is bold or subtle, when you combine two very different styles, the result can be a captivating feast for the eyes.

French Country Farmhouse

For this table setting, we wanted something that combined modern, feminine, and French country touches for a relaxed and elegant table setting. Sleek modern black flatware and satin-finished silverware stamped with decorative black bands make a sophisticated pairing. A dainty set of hand-painted salt and pepper shakers with brightly colored strawberries, an elegant tureen with red and purple florals, and a red-tinted wine glass provide visual appeal, while the embossed dishware and napkin provide texture.

Why we love this satin silver and black flatware combination: The satin shine of the Chantilly design with its modern French “lace” pattern is the perfect feminine contrast to the strong square lines of the Jason black flatware. Polished implements give each unique silverware set a luxe finish to match any hosting style.

Tip #2: Balance the size and proportion of flatware pieces

When lined up beside each other, does the flatware look completely out of proportion? Remember, that along with creating a visual aesthetic, when designing a tablescape you want to provide silverware that is fairly equal in weight for ease of use. One workaround for the balance issues is to ensure that the two main pieces of silverware, namely the table fork and dinner knife match, with other cutlery of different proportions as extras.

Midcentury Modern Minimalist

We avoided ornate details and opted for no-frills sophistication for this minimalist table setting. For the flatware, we chose two midcentury-inspired styles: clean lines and smooth handles and extravagant teardrop handles with hammered details. Geometric-shaped tealight holders harmonize with the square plates. Prismatic glassware and chunky crystal napkin rings create a sleek fusion of sparkle and light. Monochromatic shades complete the modern minimalist aesthetic.

Why we love this unique silverware set pairing: The almost whimsical larger-than-life teardrop handles of the Cosage design are a visual treat. Add to that the hammered texture and this artful flatware design is a true one-of-a-kind. The nascent steel handles of the Jason flatware are smooth, with subtle natural pitting, which develops during the forging process. What more can we say? These are two of the best flatware sets for creating a modern elegant tablescape!

Tip #3: Vary texture and finish and mix metals to add visual and tactile interest

Experiment with textures and finishes to create a unique tablescape. Combine matte and polished finishes and blend styles with hammered or etched designs. And just like with home décor, mixing metals at the table is encouraged. So go ahead and mix stainless steel flatware with brass candlesticks or copper flatware with silver and gold tones. Mixing metals is a great way to express your style and it invites dimension, sparkle, and warmth to the table.

Old World Elegance

When creating this elegant tablescape, we drew inspiration from the past for a blend of grandeur and a touch of old-world charm. For this, the luxurious feeling of vintage gold flatware was a must, in designs that combined traditional and contemporary accents. Gold-rimmed glassware and china, a set of brass candlesticks, and an antique gold napkin complete this elegant table.

Why we love this gold flatware union: First of all, let’s talk about the similar vintage gold finish that makes this pairing mesh so well. It adds a time-worn quality to these beautiful gold flatware sets. The Plateau design features square handles with distinctive beveled ends. Contrasting these four-sided handles are the round organic handles of the Camellia flatware. You might say this gold flatware pairing is “unmatched” in beauty!

Tip #4: Don’t underestimate the power of accessorizing with napkin rings

For the Old World Elegance tablescape above, we used a coordinating gold napkin ring to tie everything together. Napkin rings come in many materials, including metal, wood, and glass. They are a great anchoring tool and complement many flatware styles and finishes.
