Fresh and vibrant red grape tomatoes are gently sliced to look like blooming tulips. Each blossom is filled with mozzarella and fit into a green onion stem, making this appetizer a feast for the eyes. Add some basil leaves to complete the Caprese combo. Perfect for parties, brunches, or special occasions, like Mother’s Day!
Prep Time: 30 minutes Serves: 3-6 people Calories: (1 serving) 92 kcal
Ingredients:
Grape tomatoes
Bocconcini (Mozzarella balls)
Bamboo skewers
Green onions or spring onions (you will only be using the green portions, so the onion size doesn’t matter)
Fresh basil, for leaves or olive oil dressing (not shown)
Olive oil and balsamic vinegar
Instructions:
Making sure that the stem side is down, slice an X on the top of each tomato, to about ¾ of the way down
Remove the seeds using a small spoon
Continue with the other tomatoes
Fill each opened tomato with a bocconcini
Stick the sharp end of a skewer through the stem of each “tulip”
Trim the green stalks off your onions
Slide a stalk over each skewer
Arrange the tulips on a serving platter or create a tulip bouquet in a glass container

Serve them with a dressing of olive oil seasoned with oregano and chopped basil. Place the dressing in a bowl next to the arrangement for easy dipping. *
*Dip or drizzle options: Balsamic vinegar and olive oil (3 tablespoons of oil to 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar) or a sweet balsamic glaze. Guests can dip their tomato tulips into the dressing of their choice.
For pickle lovers in the group, here’s another version of this recipe. To create these petite tulips, we used 4-inch bamboo skewers, which are the perfect length for these baby gherkin pickle “leaves”.
